Imam Ghazali Books

Early Life:

Imam Ghazali, Abū Ḥāmid Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Ghazālī was born on AH 448 (1056/7) in in Tabaran, a town in the district of Tus. He belonged to the family of religious and Sufi people. His father died leaving him and his younger brother Ahmad alone in the care of a Sufi. Imam Ghazali took his early education in fiqh from a local teacher Ahmad al-Radhakani. Later he got under the teachings of al-Juwayni, the outstanding Muslim Scholar of his time.


After the death of al-Juwayni, he left Nishapur and joined the court of Nizam al-Mulk. Shortly Nizam-al-Mulk advanced Ghazali to take care of Nizamiyya madrasa in Baghdad. After few years in 1095, he left his career and went to Mecca for pilgrimage. Then after a year he cam back to Tus to spend several years of service in uzla(The seclusion) but meanwhile he continued to teach in zawiya (private madrasa) and khanqah (Sufi monastery) that he had built. 

Imam Ghazali writings:

Al-Ghazali contributed significantly to the development of a systematic view of Sufism and its integration and acceptance in mainstream Islam. As a scholar of orthodox Islam, he belonged to the Shafi'i school of Islamic jurisprudence and to the Asharite school of theology. Al-Ghazali played a noteworthy part in spreading Sufism and Sharia. He was the first to consolidate the ideas of Sufism into Sharia laws and the first to give a formal depiction of Sufism in his works. His works fortify the position of Sunni Islam, contrasted with different schools of thought. Al-Ghazali strongly rejected their ideology and wrote several books on criticism of Baatinyas which significantly weakened their status.  A total of about 60 works can be attributed to Al-Ghazali.
